истКрупнейшее выступление современных индейцев США за свои права в резервации Пайн-Ридж [ Pine Ridge Reservation] в штате Южная Дакота 27 февраля - 8 мая 1973. Акция протеста индейцев оглала [ Oglala] была организована Движением американских индейцев [ American Indian Movement]. Повстанцы выдвинули несколько требований: создать сенатскую подкомиссию во главе с сенатором Э. Кеннеди [ Kennedy, Edward (Ted) Moore] для проверки деятельности Бюро по делам индейцев [ Bureau of Indian Affairs] и Министерства внутренних дел [ Department of the Interior, U.S.] в отношении оглала, отменить "конституцию резервации Пайн-Ридж", принятую в 1935 в соответствии с Законом о реорганизации Индейский администрации [ Indian Reorganization Act], и позволить оглала создать собственную форму самоуправления, а также поручить главе сенатской комиссии по иностранным делам У. Фулбрайту [ Fulbright, James William] проверить ход выполнения 371 договора между правительством США и индейскими племенами [ Indian treaties]. Выступление было начато 200 индейцами, через полмесяца повстанцев было уже 500 человек. 11 марта они провозгласили Независимую нацию оглала. Осаду поселка вели вооруженные формирования ФБР, полиции и армии, использовавшие кроме стрелкового оружия гранатометы, бронетранспортеры, самолет "Фантом" и 3 вертолета.
